Tales From The Crypt

Coming from a family of 9 children there was never a dull moment in our house.  One of us was always coming up something to do which usually got us into trouble.  I was the oldest girl  (there was only 3 of us) and the second child in the line of 9 with only one sibling older, a brother.  My place in the line brought with it the title of "mother's little helper" and believe me my mom needed all the help she could get.  I helped her take care of my younger brothers and sisters.

Me and my brother, Keith at two and three years old respectively
My older brother had such charisma and finesse that he could pretty much talk me into anything.  He could turn a no into a yes with the snap of his finger and you really never knew what hit you.  When he smiled he won the hearts of everyone including me.  He was an instigator and I was his follower (and so were many others who could not resist his charm).  Here is just one of the "tales from my crypt" I thought I would share with you.

We lived in the country about 7 miles from town.  I suppose my dad thought he could keep a better handle on us and keep us out of trouble if we were in the middle of no where with no way out!  HA  We didn't have much in the way of toys just what we came up with in our imagination and when you don't have a lot of toys you'd be surprised at what you can come up with using sticks, cane poles, string, and determination.

Pretty much the way our creek looked

In the winter months when the weather turned really, really cold we would go down to the creek located behind our house which would freeze over.  We didn't have skates, too expensive so we skated with our shoes on (the only pair we had).  I had just gotten a new pair of the cutest little shoes.  They laced up like a saddle oxford but instead of leather they were a brushed velveteen fabric with different colored patches along the laces in different colors.  I was so proud of them!

Well, my brother wanted to go skating on the creek but didn't know if the ice would hold us.  So, he said to me "you go first and test the ice because you are the heaviest".  Well, I was chubby at the time but I had my new pair of shoes on and was afraid I would ruin them.  He kept coaching me to "just do it, you'll be fine, I'm sure the ice will hold you."  Because I was a girl and wanted to prove that I wasn't afraid and that I was just as tough as he and his friends were I took the first step onto the ice, then another and yet another.

By this time, I was feeling pretty good about myself showing them that I wasn't afraid and that the ice was okay. I had gotten to the middle of the creek when all of the sudden the ice gave way beneath me and I went sinking into the bottom of the muddy creek calf high.  He stood on the bank laughing, bent over with his hands above his knees.  I knew I was in trouble because I fell again for one of his  jokes.  I also knew I was in trouble with mom because as I walked out of the water my new shoes were soaked with water and mud and the lovely velveteen looked like that of an animal with matted hair.  I ran all the way home and instead of telling my mom, I went to the basement, removed my shoes and hid them under the staircase. I worried all the rest of the day about them but had to wait for them to dry out before I could brush them hoping they would look the same way.  The next morning I went downstairs with a brush from our shoe box and tried to brush the velveteen but it was still too wet and the inside of the shoes were still full of squishing water.  I didn't put them on but took them into the living room hid them behind a chair and waited until it was time to catch the bus before I slipped them on.  I wore them to school soaking wet, hoping that by evening time they would be dry and I could sneak back into the basement to brush them up.

Not the same style but the same muddy mess

With all the activity going on in the house with the other kids mom didn't have much time to notice that anything was wrong.  I continued to be worried and when the bus dropped us off, I ran straight into the basement removed my shoes and wet socks.  By this time, the shoes were dry but had a dry ring of mud around them where the mud had settled.  I brushed and brushed but couldn't remove the mud ring.  They looked better but not at all like they should have.  So, I gave up and wore them hoping mom wouldn't notice.  This was one of those few times when she did.  Because I was never good at lying, (the words "I'm lying" forever etched across my forehead) I told her the truth. She was very disappointed with me (the worst kind of punishment was to hear your parents tell you they were disappointed in you) and said I was too rough on my shoes and I was going to have to wear them just the way they were. And wear them I did! I got off light that time because she didn't tell my dad.  He would have really gotten mad because I was very hard on my shoes and clothes. I was a tomboy and always falling down, ripping a hole in the knees of my pants, and wearing out my shoes long before my sisters did.

You ask, what did my brother do when he saw me crying about my shoes and running home?  He did what he always did...laughed.

Do you have a story to tell from your "tales from the crypt".   Do tell!

The Color Purple

I have an affinity with the color purple.  As I age I seem to like it more and more.  Having said that, a friend of mine told me years ago that "you know you are getting older when you love the color purple and the rouge on your cheeks remind you of a clown."  I hope the latter hasn't occurred yet but how would I know as I don't have anyone to tell me. HA  I wondered what the color purple in its light and darkest shades symbolizes.  This is what I found out:

Purple is the color of good judgment. It is the color of people seeking spiritual fulfillment. It is said if you surround yourself with purple you will have peace of mind. Purple is a good color to use in meditation.
Purple has been used to symbolize magic and mystery, as well as royalty. Being the combination of red and blue, the warmest and coolest colors, purple is believed to be the ideal color. Most children love the color purple. Purple is the color most favored by artists. Thursday's color is purple.
Violet is the color of purpose. Violet is associated with the Crown chakra (This links individual and universal).

Having read that, I do have to agree with the color giving me peace of mind.  I thought I might share a few images of various items in the palest and darkest hues of the color:

Traveling in Europe

All Aboard...Come with me as we take you on a train ride...a 12 hour train ride from Milan, Italy to Theux, Belgium about an hour from Liege, Belgium

This is the train station in Liege now....very modern.  At the time, it looked nothing like this!

This is a funny tale of a train ride daughter and I made traveling from Milan, Italy to Liege, Belgium 17 years ago or so.  It wasn't funny at the time but thinking back to it now I find myself smiling. We were traveling to Theux, Belgium, a lovely little town about an hour outside Liege so that daughter could go back to visit the host families she stayed with her junior high school year as an exchange student. My husband was in Milan on business and this was one of the several trips to Europe that I was very fortunate to go on with him. This time, taking our daughter(who was then starting college) along with us.

I can only say that it was not at all like riding a train in the United States. Because my Grandfather worked for the railroad and we were able to ride on the trains in the United States for half price. I fondly remember once riding the train from Indiana to Georgia with my Grandmother and brother. But this was not anything like that!

The train schedule showed two travel times for traveling to Liege, Belgium. In the early morning or late evening. I was looking forward to going in the morning so that I could view the different countries we would be going through during the day but because arrangements were made at the last minute, we could not get on the early morning train and instead had to ride on the evening train which left the main train station at 9:00 p.m. This was to be a 12 hour train ride with one layover in Luxembourg and because we were traveling on the cheap we did not bother to get a sleeping car. (What for? This was to be an adventure) So, we boarded the train, found the right car and took the first compartment we came to.  There were already people sitting in two of the three seats that faced us so we sat across from them. The gentleman ( who was a frequent traveler on the trains) told us to close the curtain (each compartment had a set of curtains that you could close) so that people would think that all of the seats were taken. (I thought those curtains were really quaint) So we did. Of course, never traveling on a train in Europe before we did not bring any water, food, pillows, or a blanket with us making it very hard to be comfortable with no where to lay your head. Because of making the arrangements late I was unable to be on a car that allowed smoking (back then I smoked) but no problem, I could just go right outside the door next to our car and onto a little area with a rail around it that had little pull-out seats to smoke.

So, as our journey begins, the ticket agent tears open our curtain and very curtly says Passports. We in turn give him ours and he checked our passports looking at us and looking at our passport, looking at us and looking at our passports making me wonder if he was going to allow us to even stay on the train. No smile, no thank you just a stern look and off to the next person. Of course, I could only speak English and had to rely on my daughter to translate for me (which she did very well) and because she could speak French translating other language was easier for her. Of course, we could not speak any Italian but thanks to daughter when people smiled and asked questions she could pretty much figure out what they were saying....As for me, I was pretty much lost the entire time. (Sigh)

As we travel through all the large and small cities in Italy, and France and everyone is either sleeping or reading I decide now would be the time to go for a cigarette. So, I exit the door directly outside our compartment. It is pitch black, the train is moving fairly quickly (I'm not sure about the speed but recall that it was moving very fast) and I am leaning over the side of the railing deep in thought and starting to get really tired when all of the sudden another train traveling on another track going in the opposite direction comes flying by and sucks me up against the outside of the car. My heart was beating 50 miles a minute and I think this is it! I'm going to die out here. I couldn't even push myself away from the side of the train while the train was passing. After the train passed and being pretty shook up, I decided NOT to go out for another cigarette until morning, when I could see.

About the time we are nodding off, and I decided to use my cape as a pillow against the window and daughters head laying on my shoulders the train stops in Basil, Switzerland the first city you enter into Switzerland. Let me tell you, it was just like something right out of a movie. Two police officers enter the train and yank open the curtains flip on the lights and say "passports". While this is happening, I hear dogs barking and entering the train. About that time they are in our compartment sniffing us and everything in the car. The two policemen reminded me of how Officers would have been during the Nazis Invasion and literally scared me to death. After they left our compartment (It seemed like we were on that platform forever) as I am looking out our window, I see those same two policemen yelling wildly at a man with their clubs raised like they were going to hit him. I quickly asked daughter what was going on as they were speaking French and she said the man did not have a Visa and they just threw him off the train! I could not believe it! Just like that!

The train finally had the clearance to leave and off we go again. By this time we are EXHAUSTED with little sleep if any and still several hours from where we are supposed to layover. I don't know if it was because of the constant stopping and starting, the roaring of the train, lack of sleep, no food or the frightening scare in Switzerland but we both had the starting of a terrible headache that would last until we got to Belgium.

When we finally arrived in Luxembourg it was around 7:00 a.m. and we still had two hours left on our journey. Having only 30 minutes to use the bathroom, grab something to drink (we did not have the right currency for anything else) and find the right train going in the right direction the train was boarding. So we hopped on with banging headaches until we reached Liege. This is where the host family was to pick us up. As we are standing on the platform waiting, waiting, and waiting, I am starting to get worried that something is amiss so we decide to go out onto the street thinking they are out there waiting for us. When we go outside the station I immediately start to smell something that smells like fried food and become sick to my stomach. My daughter tells me that is Belgium waffles that I am smelling (which are supposed to be delicious). But, by this time, I just want to lay down and sleep...to close my eyes so my head will stop hurting and wanting the motion of the train to leave my body. Not seeing anyone she recognizes we go back to the platform and wait some more.

FINALLY, she sees them... Kisses on both cheeks, Bonjour's to welcome us, introductions and we are finally off to what I hope is a warm bed, coffee, and food for these two weary travelers. What a ride!  All I can say is that we wanted an experience and we had one!  Well, time to depart the train as we have arrived at the station. I hope you enjoyed the ride and will travel with me again. LOL I have several more stories to share but will save them for a later date. Always an adventure when traveling with daughter! HA

I leave you with this beautiful church in Liege, one of the many beautiful sites that you can visit. I think it has a very old world feel.

A Bit Of This And A Bit Of That

Hi everyone,

Not much to report today.  I've been very busy getting an order ready for a shipment for (4) of my stenciled flour sack tea towels.  These have become very popular and I seem to be selling quite a lot of them.  I do a lot of custom orders on these and can stencil any combination of numbers you might want...birthday, address, lucky numbers.  I love stenciling them in a set of three numbers like this:

So, if you are looking for something Farmhouse Chic for your kitchen with a specific number just let me know and I would be happy to accommodate your request up to three numbers.

I'm going to be working on some small flowered print fabric tote bags in some lovely colors as soon as I can find a tutorial on a pattern that I like.  I'm a self-taught sewer and find it easier to view a tutorial instead of reading a pattern.  I am also a bit of a perfectionist and if it isn't just the way I think it should be, I have been known to completely rip all the seams out and start over! HA  A curse for sure!  Some of the fabric I will be using:

Sweet little Farmhouse Chic
Cabbage and Roses
Both bags will be lined with the solid fabric next to it.  I hope to be adding these to my shop soon.

That's pretty much it for today.  Hope you all have a great day!

Quote of the Day and Some Very Lovely Music

Quote of the day:

Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step ~Martin Luther King, Jr.

Here is a lovely French tune that I heard on the blog of Sandra van doorn + illustrations. You can visit her (Here). She creates some of the most beautiful illustrations of characters that I have ever seen. They are not only whimsical but a delight to look at.

Wishing all of you a lovely start to your week!

Zurich, Switzerland

Hey everyone,

I was reading on someone's blog recently (I'm sorry, I can't remember which one...toss this up to old age HA) about Zurich, Switzerland and it reminded me of the time husband was there on business and I had the opportunity to go with him. We were there for a little over a week and while he was in meetings I was able to do a bit of shopping and sightseeing.  We stayed at the Hotel Montana which was about a 15 minutes walk from the hotel to the the main train station. From there you were only a couple blocks from Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich's main downtown shopping area. It was beautiful!

Hotel Montana
The restaurant in the Hotel...I had the best Creme Brulee I've ever had here!
Trains running down the middle of the street
Bahnhofstrasse
We went in November so the weather wasn't as nice as it could have been but not bad.  I wore a cape and was plenty warm.  There was a lot of excitement near our hotel during the day and into the night while we were there.  When looking outside our room window, I noticed a lot of people getting in and out of cars and standing on the corner and then the same car coming back around in a couple of minutes to pick them up.  Very, very, busy...humm...so busy I started wondering what was going on.  It seems Zurich had just legalized marijuana and this was the PLACE to be if you wanted any! HA  The fact that we were near the University may have had something to do with all the "visitors". Our waitress told us that they had just "cleaned up the area" and it was considered safe.  I didn't feel threatened at all.  Besides, it was a small price to pay for being so close to the main Bahnhofstrasse.

For more information on Zurich's downtown city, check out the video below.

This was a wonderful experience and I was so glad that I was able to go. My only regret was that I didn't take any pictures of this area. It was really beautiful!
